POSITION TITLE:          Production Unit Manager

The Atlantic Alumina Company, LLC is the leading producer of Alumina in the United States. Our Gramercy refinery produces 1.2 million tons per year of smelter-grade alumina (SGA) for producing aluminum and chemical-grade alumina (CGA) used in various industrial applications.

Job Summary/Objective:

 This role is responsible for providing leadership and operational support to the assigned unit in the plant. In this role, the Unit Manager will provide direction and leadership to shift crew managers and their crews of operators.

Scope and Responsibility:

·        Will lead a production department with 25 to 40 production employees and 6 to 12 salaried employees.

·        Hourly employees represented by United Steel Workers 

Education/Training Requirements:

·        Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or other related degree.

·        Preferred candidates are experienced in working in a major Chemical Process Facility that has typical unit operations including reactors, evaporation, heat interchange, solids-liquids separation, crystal formation, powerhouse, and calcination, and must have supervisory experience over a wide array of employees and -functions.

·        Supervision in a union-represented facility is a plus but not required.

·        At least 5-7 years of experience in Operations / Production within an industrial/manufacturing environment

·        At least 4 years of supervision and management experience

Essential Functions

·        Create a culture of personnel safety through engagement in daily walks, MSHA compliance, workplace exam conformance, hazard identification, JHS committee actions, and accountability.

·        Establish a continuous improvement mindset in the unit with LEAN, Kaizen, or other proven methodology.

·        Lead, coach, train, and mentor team members to create a high-performing team.

·        Ensure planning and scheduling compliance for employees, production, and reliability objectives.

·        Drive productivity and efficiency across departments through KPI management and budget compliance.

·        Provide direction on residual life improvements and accountability.

·        Maintain accurate information and direction with the daily management system.

·        Ensure the tracking of open reliability items and driving follow-up.

·        Provide support for turn-around activities, as necessary.

·        Deliver environmental compliance and reporting.

·        Identify short- and long-term needs for capital equipment for the unit,

·        Partner with peer leaders in other departments to deliver exceptional results.

·        Review and adjust process and equipment parameters to ensure conformance to the monthly production Plan. 

·        Review daily priorities to ensure that resources are allocated to achieve safety, environmental, production, raw materials, energy, and quality goals.

·        Review all aspects of daily work to ensure that resources are efficiently allocated so that work is completed safely, production resources are maintained, and operations are maintained with the least cost.

·        Identify and implement best-in-class operating practices that support Manufacturing Excellence principles.

·        Review the work of direct reports and their staff ensuring compliance with the United Steel Workers agreement and all Atalco policies and procedures.
